A Reflection on Still Life

Chris Gollon has always been what the French term an 'en tete' painter, meaning he paints from his own mind's eye and prior thought rather than from life. This may be why his still life seem to retain the feeling of a human presence or mood. Many have already sold but can be seen on the Works page. Sometimes the wine escapes from one glass to another, like a physical attraction between two people. Sometimes the objects seem to have their own strange essence. As the artist notes, it is almost as if the drama outside the canvas is as important as that in the painting itself.

Chris Gollon painted over 40 still life in 2007, and his innovations in that genre were very well received by public, collectors and academics. It was partially these innovations which led to the Institute of Advanced Study, Durham University, taking an interest in Gollon's work, exhibiting it, then offering a Fellowship.
