Selected Paintings

Location: IAP Fine Art, 65 Roman Rd, London E2 0QN
Date: to 2nd May 2009

This exhibition in our lower floor exhibition space, featured selected recent works. Some were the preliminary paintings he produced before becoming Fellow and First Artist in Residence at the prestigious Institute of Advanced Study, Durham University, (January – March 2009). Gollon’s powerful and formally innovative paintings came to the attention of the Directors of the IAS in 2007, and together with some of the world’s leading academics and creative thinkers he was then invited to take part in a major international research project straddling all disciplines from Arts & Humanities, to Sciences and Social Sciences. This exhibition entitled ‘Being Human (Preliminary Thoughts)’ at IAP Fine Art showed Chris Gollon’s preliminary works and his own early thoughts on the Fellowship & Residency’s theme of ‘Being Human’.

Venus (II)Venus (II)

“For this preliminary paintings on the theme of Being Human, I was developing my painting style further, and in a new direction, to search for the means to paint the Fellowship’s specific subject matter. For the paintings in this exhibition, I started looking at how some gods, which humans have needed, do survive when civilizations change; yet some, like Venus, do not make it through. The series of paintings of a modern Venus show a faceless, out-moded god; yet she still retains a powerful presence, almost like a human with supernatural powers.” Chris Gollon (Sept 2008)

“These paintings were painted before Chris took up his Fellowship, and in preparation for it. Since he finished two major public commissions in early 2008, I am amazed at the creative energy Chris has shown by pushing on again, by developing such a striking new style of painting anatomy, almost a new way of seeing the human figure, or making it hold an idea.” David Tregunna, Director, IAP Fine Art (Sept 2008)
