Gollon At Henley (Version II)Gollon At Henley (Version II)

The River & Rowing Museum commissioned a painting on the theme of the beauty and pain of sport from Chris Gollon. The finished work (pictured), depicting the Henley Royal Regatta for the Museum’s permanent collection, was unveiled within this exhibition of the artist’s preliminary photographs, drawings, silk-screen prints and painted studies. Four editions (one edition pictured here bottom right), each of 20 silk-screen studies, each signed and numbered by the artist, were produced by Chris Gollon in advance of the exhibition, and are for sale from this website (see prints for sale).

Chris Gollon took the unusual step of depicting the losing team, against the indifference of the pretty girls in the colourful crowd. See Commissions page for more information on the story behind this unusual museum commission, and the artist's approach to it, along with all the studies made to achieve the finished work.

Jointly funded by the American Friends of the RRM and by Beefeater Gin, the commissioned painting, now forms part of the Museum's permanent collection, alongside Raoul Dufy's 'Regatta at Henley', and works by Whistler, Piper & Trevelyan. Gollon's image will also be used by the Museum and various agencies to promote the 2012 Olympics. A tour of this exhibition to the USA is also planned.
