Location: River & Rowing Museum, Mill Meadows, Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire

Gollon At Henley (Version II)Gollon At Henley (Version II)

The River & Rowing Museum has commissioned a painting on the theme of the beauty and pain of sport from Chris Gollon. The finished work (pictured, left), depicting the Henley Royal Regatta for the Museum’s permanent collection, will be unveiled within this exhibition of the artist’s preliminary photographs, drawings, silk-screen prints and painted studies. Four editions (one edition pictured here), each of 20 silk-screen studies, each signed and numbered by the artist, have been produced by Chris Gollon in advance of the exhibition, and are for sale from this website in advance of and during the exhibition (see prints for sale).

Chris Gollon has taken the unusual step of depicting the losing team, against the indifference of the pretty girls in the colourful crowd. See Commissions page for more information on the story behind this unusual museum commission, and the artist's approach to it, along with all the studies made to achieve the finished work.

Jointly funded by the American Friends of the RRM and by Beefeater Gin, the commissioned painting, will form part of the Museum's permanent collection, alongside Raoul Dufy's 'Regatta at Henley', and works by Whistler, Piper & Trevelyan. Gollon's image will also be used by the Museum and various agencies to promote the 2012 Olympics. A tour of this exhibition to the USA is also planned. EARLY THOUGHTS

Date: 10 July - 20 Sept 2008

Location: IAP Fine Art, 65 Roman Rd, London E2 0QN

The TrialThe Trial

Established British artist Chris Gollon has been offered a unique Fellowship and Residency at the prestigious Institute of Advanced Study, Durham University, (January – March 2009). Gollon’s powerful and formally innovative paintings came to the attention of the Directors of the IAS in 2007, and together with some of the world’s leading academics and creative thinkers he has now been invited to take part in a major international research project straddling all disciplines from Arts & Humanities, to Sciences and Social Sciences. At IAP Fine Art, London, this exhibition entitled ‘Early Thoughts’ will show Chris Gollon’s preliminary works and his own early thoughts on the Fellowship & Residency’s theme of ‘Being Human’.

For this show I am starting the ball rolling for my residency at Durham in 2009. The big ideas (hopefully) will come during the residency with the interaction between myself and the other fellows. I will therefore not be dealing with the themes specified by the Institute – i.e. mind/consciousness – boundary crossing – crises of personhood etc. However, I would prefer to begin my Residency not in the foothills but half way up the mountain so to speak: hence the early start. I will begin with a more general approach to being human. I have decided to put the human being on trial in the first few canvases and see what happens. I will then try to do something different (and hopefully significant) on what it means to be human. Chris Gollon (June 2008)
