Chris Gollon has been offered and has accepted a major commission from the award-winning River & Rowing Museum, Henley-on-Thames, to paint the Henley Regatta. The museum owns Raoul Dufy's famous painting 'Regatta At Henley', and Gollon's work will similarly become part of the museum's permanent collection. The work will also be used to promote rowing at the time of the 2012 Olympics.

Chris completed 4 days' research at this year's Regatta (July 2007), sketching and taking photos from the starting line, finishing line, boat sheds and the various enclosures. The theme of the painting is the joy, beauty and pain of competitive sport. He will work on the painting this autumn/winter. It will be unveiled, with a 2-month exhibition of associated studies in the River & Rowing Museum, at the time of the Regatta in summer 2008 (see Exhibitions page). The painting is also likely to tour to American museums. The work shown here is one of the first monochrome studies that artist has produced, depicting a losing rower, and which will form part of the exhibition summer 2008.

This exciting museum commission has been kindly funded and supported by the American Friends of the River & Rowing Museum and by Beefeater.
