KALEIDOMORPHISM

In 2005, Chris Gollon began a collaborative work with JABOD (film makers Karl Roberts & Kim Scott) entitled ‘Quintych’. This began a creative journey to the point where a new art form may have been created, and which we have entitled: Kaleidomorphism. Moving like a magic lantern or a kaleidoscope, and split into five separately moving sections on a single screen, fifteen years of Chris Gollon’s paintings move toward us and recede at differing speeds, set to very affecting music by Paolo Conte, Calexico and Tom Waits (the latter with Gavin Bryars). This cinematic art work/short film will shortly be shown at film festivals in UK and abroad.

Stations of the Cross to be completed by Good Friday 2008

Stations of the Cross (X): Jesus Is Stripped Of His GarmentsStations of the Cross (X): Jesus Is Stripped Of His Garments

Chris Gollon completed this, the tenth Station of the Cross painting in August 2007. We are delighted to say that funding for the remaining Stations of the Cross X-XIV has been generously given by Gollon collectors, and congregation members. Chris Gollon has worked tirelessly against the clock to finish the last Station, so that all 14 can be unveiled and used in the 10am service on Good Friday 2008 at St John on Bethnal Green. Before they are installed permanently in the church later in the year, they will be used in all Easter services, as well as being displayed in St John on Bethnal Green from 12-3pm on Saturdays 22nd and 23rd March. For more information please visit the Commissions page.

Chris Gollon accepts museum commission to paint the Henley Regatta

Study for Regatta commission: Rower (I)Study for Regatta commission: Rower (I)

Chris Gollon has been offered and has accepted a major commission from the award-winning River & Rowing Museum, Henley-on-Thames, to paint the Henley Regatta. The museum owns Raoul Dufy's famous painting 'Regatta At Henley', and Gollon's work will similarly become part of the museum's permanent collection. The work will also be used to promote rowing at the time of the 2012 Olympics.

Chris completed 4 days' research at this year's Regatta (July 2007), sketching and taking photos from the starting line, finishing line, boat sheds and the various enclosures. The theme of the painting is the joy, beauty and pain of competitive sport. He will work on the painting this autumn/winter. It will be unveiled, with a 2-month exhibition of associated studies in the River & Rowing Museum, at the time of the Regatta in summer 2008 (see Exhibitions page). The painting is also likely to tour to American museums. The work shown here is one of the first monochrome studies that artist has produced, depicting a losing rower, and which will form part of the exhibition summer 2008.

This exciting museum commission has been kindly funded and supported by the American Friends of the River & Rowing Museum and by Beefeater.

Fellowship, Institute of Advanced Study

The TrialThe Trial

Following a very well-received exhibition at the Institute of Advanced Study, University of Durham, in November 2007, the IAS has offered Chris Gollon a Fellowship. This will be taken up January - March 2009. The IAS is based in the Georgian, grade-one listed Cosin's Hall, Palace Green, (adjacent to Durham Cathedral).

The IAS will convert one of the academic rooms temporarily into a studio. The Institute has invited a small number of leading scientists, social scientists, professors of humanities and British artist Chris Gollon to look at what it is to be human in the 21st century. Subsections to this theme will include 'Home', 'Mind-Conciousness', 'Crises of Personhood' and 'Abjection, Bare Life & De-humanization'. Chris will produce 15 paintings during the Fellowship, which will be exhibited in spring 2009 at the IAS, and then tour. Impressed by Gollon's innovations both in technique and in his image-making, as he describes the human condition in a unique way, the IAS see his studio as a place of experimentation akin to a scientific laboratory. Chris Gollon is looking forward to his sojourn at Durham, and to the interaction and conversations with leading figures from other disciplines. For more information on the theme 'Being Human' or on the IAS, visit: Institute of Advanced Study.

A reflection on Still Life

Still Life (Homage to Pittura Metafisica)Still Life (Homage to Pittura Metafisica)

Still Life With Two Glasses & Die (I)Still Life With Two Glasses & Die (I)Chris Gollon has always been what the French term an 'en tete' painter, meaning he paints from his own mind's eye and prior thought rather than from life. This may be why his still life seem to retain the feeling of a human presence or mood. Many have already sold but can be seen on the Works page. Sometimes the wine escapes from one glass to another, like a physical attraction between two people. Sometimes the objects seem to have their own strange essence. As the artist notes, it is almost as if the drama outside the canvas is as important as that in the painting itself.

Chris Gollon painted over 40 still life in 2007, and his innovations in that genre were very well received by public, collectors and academics. It was partially these innovations which led to the Institute of Advanced Study, Durham University, taking an interest in Gollon's work, exhibiting it, then offering a Fellowship.
