Private collection. This work is from a series of 14 monotypes Chris Gollon made at Peacock Printmakers, Aberdeen, in January 2000. Chris Gollon enjoyed the process described below, and upon the return to his studio, began using a similar process in his paintings. He still often uses the other end of the brush to scratch into the paint surface to make lines, and this was sparked by his first foray into making monotypes. (A clear example of scratching in can be seen in his Stations of the Cross II on the Commissions page). One method in art can often be imported into another.

Monotypes are a reverse one-off process. The printmaker heavily inks a zinc plate, and the artist makes the image by removing the ink with a brush, finger or rag. Once finished, a slightly dampened sheet of fine art paper is placed over it, and it is then passed through a heavy press (which looks and acts like a mangle). Once out the other side, the paper is peeled back, miraculously holding the image perfectly, while the plate is just a mess of ink with no trace of the image. Only one print can be made each time, and the the plate is re-inked and the artist makes a new and different image each time.
