Just as rock musicians do cover versions to test the strength of their style, and to see if it can add to or equal the original song, so painters turn to their own versions of previous artist's works. This is a Gollonesque cover version of Edvard Munch's famous painting 'The Scream'. Gollon has placed the figure in his own stylized landscapes, and placed a dark-hooded mountain nearby. The plants seem blow into the mouth of the scream like weeds wafting in a riverbed, suggesting the figure's anxiety is close to the feeling of drowning. The painting has a curious mixture of humour, menace and empathy.
This work was shown in chris Gollon's solo show in Cork St, London, in February 2005.
