This painting sold from from Chris Gollon's 2006 solo show 'House of Sleep'. The painting shows the god Thanatos (Death) and his mother the god of night, Nix. The painting takes the first half of its title from a lyric in the track Not Dark Yet, on Bob Dylan's album Time Out of Mind.
"It's not dark yet/But it's gettin' there.." is one of the lyrics which partially inspired the painting. For the depiction of Thanatos, Chris Gollon looked at and paid homage to Otto Dix's painting 'The Seven Deadly Sins'.
Chris Gollon had chosen to approach the 'House of Sleep' by painting it as a sort of wild, rock n' roll place. He has therefore painted in a champagne and red wine still life, with candle snubbed out (smoke in still life painting traditionally symbolizing the temporality of material wealth).
