This painting in art history terms is a very rare image, if not unique, in that it depicts a scene where Judas and the Magdalene are alone with each other. The Magdalene depicted here is the same model Chris Gollon used as the Magdalene in his Stations of the Cross, so this is also a partial study for the Stations.
Chris Gollon has used himself as the model for Judas. The note pinned to the tree has words obscured, but finishes with Sorry, Judas. As men do run in the air when hung, Gollon takes this to the extreme of pathos by his use of cartoon-like running legs. The painting takes partial inspiration from the Bob Dylan lyrics: "I can't think for you/You'll have to decide/Whether Judas Iscariot/Had God on his side.."
