This painting formed part of Chris Gollon's 2006 London solo show entitled 'House of Sleep', which was the kingdom of Hypnoss, the Greek god of sleep. He dwelled there with his mother, Nix, (god of night) and his brother Thanatos (god of death). His son was Morpheus, (god of dreams), hence morphia etc.. Chris Gollon chose to approach the theme 'House of Sleep' in his paintings as a strange, rock n' roll place, somewhere we might like to make a brief visit to, or peek into. Here, the battered guitar suggests a real rock n' roll morning, as Morpheus lies stretched out amid empty glasses. The morning's soft light infuses the room, reminiscent of Vermeer, making it seem a strangely silent picture.
For a Gollonesque depiction of Thanatos and Nix, another painting in the 'House of Sleep' exhibition was 'It's Not Dark Yet, A Homage To Otto Dix & Bob Dylan'.
