This painting is a Gollonesque homage to Goya. No-one knows whether Goya might have agreed, but in his excellent recent book on Goya, Robert Hughes describes Goya's work of the same title as the image of a masterless dog in a godless world. Chris Gollon has kept that same feeling of loneliness and added to it with an almost comic "close-up" circling to magnify the nose, the sure indicator of a dog's well-being. Via this, in the absence of a master, it is the spectator who judges its well-being.
This work formed part of the 2006 series of paintings entitled 'Is That All There Is?', taking its title and theme from the song made famous by Peggy Lee, and shown at the Toni Heath Gallery. It subsequently sold to a private collection in Spain.
