This painting was an early sketch for a series of studies for a larger painting by Chris Gollon (now sold) called Sad Lisa, partially inspired by the Cat Stevens song of the same title. In his first albums Stevens was very good at writing about lost or unrequited love, and sometimes it was hard to tell whether the lover sung about was actually dead or merely lost to the singer, and posed the question whether it was the same thing anyway.
