In this painting Gollon has the sunlight subtely obscuring part of the window bar, giving a premonition of the Cross, just as Jesus is being condemned to death. Surrounded and alone his fate is ineluctable. Gollon heightens the sense of reality by placing the real figure of Jesus amongst grotesque guards and his cartoon-like masked mockers. There is a sense of evil-doing, and the guard's hand, (accentuated by a typically Gollonesque viewfinder or close-up device), pushes us away from seeing.
