This painting belongs to the series of Stations of the Cross Chris Gollon has been commissioned to paint by the Church of England for a grade-one listed church in London, designed by Sir John Soane. See Commissions page for further details on the whole series of works, and a critique by art critic Laura Gascoigne.
In this painting Jesus has fallen to his knees, dropping heavy his Cross, which lies like a dead weight and almost coffin-shaped. In his feeble state as Jesus tries to lift it, Gollon uses one of his close-up circles to heighten the view of the cruel guard's foot treading mercilessly on his hand. Humiliated and alone, Jesus seems to be viewed by all and sundry as lower than a dog, and here quite literally. As the series of Gollon's Stations continue, the sun is moving round the hot yellow sky, giving the viewer the feeling of the amount of time he endures the suffering. In the distance, a strange figure stiffens as if in a silent scream.
This Station was funded by a member of the congregation, and dedicated to all those who have worshipped at St John on Bethnal Green.
