In this painting Chris Gollon has painted his old friend (and agent) David Tregunna as Joseph of Arimathea, and Fr Alan Green as Nicodemus. The artist's daughter Alice is Mary (as in Stations IV and VIII), his son Lawrence, as in all pictures, is Jesus. St John appears bottom left, and the Magdalene top right. Gollon echoes the awkwardness of previous depictions (including Rembrandt's) of people ill-equiped or experienced at taking down the dead from crucifixions, an ineptitude that is very touching. Again Mary and the Magdalene are depicted as very modern women, giving the whole painting a modern consciousness and vitality. The ladder, and indeed Mary's gaze, seem to reach out of the picture at a reality beyond. An edition of 100 silk-screen studies for this work entitled 'Mater Dolorosa' was also produced by Chris Gollon.
