Stations of the Cross XII: Jesus Dies On The Cross
Category: Paintings
Artist: Chris Gollon
Subject: Installation
Year of Work: 2008
Media: acrylic on panel
Size: 72" x 48"
Of all the paintings from this major commission, Chris Gollon chose to paint this Station last. This was partly due to its exact location and size were not confirmed until early 2008.
In consultation with Fr Alan Green (Area Dean, Tower Hamlets), and with guidance from The Venerable Peter Delaney, Archdeacon of London, it has been suggested this Station might grace the outside of the upper gallery in St John on Bethnal Green and so be 12 feet above the central aisle, and to dramatic effect.
Chris Gollon has painted this work as if it were to be viewed from below. Verging on academic painting, it nonetheless seems visceral and modern. Gollon has chosen to paint the loin cloth as perhaps it is about to fall, hinting at a final indignity.
