In this painting Gollon has the sunlight still bright, to create a dramatic silhouette of Jesus's head against the harsh disc of the sun. The guard is once more a grotesque with no ears to hear, making Jesus' fate even more ineluctable. The juxtaposition of this unreal figure with the detailed face of Jesus gives a strange and heightened reality, sharpening the spectator's awareness of the pain inflicted by the nail.
