This painting is the third in a series in which Chris Gollon has introduced flowers (albeit Gollonesque ones) into his still life.
His innovation of the genre has continued in his use of shadows to animate the objects, and the effective scratching-in technique.
This painting is also very beautiful from the artist's use of ultramarine, which sings out against the yellow of the champagne and red flower, and vice versa.
Also, as with the second in the series, Gollon uses scratching in and elements of Cubism, and real volume in the vase. This allows him to even scratch the base of the glass over the pot, yet it still seem as though its base is flat on the table surface. Yet we enjoy the conjoined lines and the real effect of a glass. Again, there is one shadow behind which hints at a human figure about to impinge on the scene.
