This painting's origin came from Chris Gollon attendending at a friend and collector's 42nd birthday party, and the friend's welcome speech which highlighted the very eclectic mix of his close friends. In this painting the incongruity of the three, the guitar, the fish and the olives, does give the impression of three people who are good friends, but the amicable alliance is nonetheless a surprise to all.
The composition and its negative spaces are well balanced and, yet the painting has great movement. The grey behind the obviously-painted guitar makes the guitar real again, and hints at a shadow that is not there.
The whole image seems very new and modern, yet in a traditional genre, and typifies Chris Gollon's innovation of the still life. This painting was reviewed in Richard Crowe's article in New York's Whitehot Magazine Feb 2008 .
