This painting was the third of a series of studies for a larger painting by Chris Gollon (now sold) called Sad Lisa, partially inspired by the Cat Stevens song of the same title. In his first albums Stevens was very good at writing about lost or unrequited love, and sometimes it was hard to tell whether the lover sung about was actually dead or simply lost to the singer.
In this painting, Gollon also uses elements of Cubism, but with one real eye gazing out at us, and another seemingly looking back to the past.
This work was exhibited at Toni Heath Gallery, February 2007.
