The Bathers
'The Bathers'
Category: Paintings
Artist: Chris Gollon
Subject: Larger Works
Year of Work: 2005
Media: mixed media on canvas
Size: 48" x 60"
Private collection, London. This major work was purchased from chris Gollon's solo show in February 2005 in Cork St, London W1. On a theme popular with painters, (memorably Picasso and Matisse), Chris Gollon has also chosen to paint female bathers, albeit in a frozen waste rather than a Mediterranean paradise.
Chris Gollon has combined his scratching-in technique, bringing into being from thick black the recumbent woman in the foreground. The disparity of scale between these strange sirens and the landscape are typical of the Gollonesque fascination with the absurd and the illogical. Yet this image seems very alive and believable, as the figures are in correct space and drawn to enhance their volume. There is even a little seated-woman homage to Matisse.
