Private collection. This painting is partially inspired by Chris Gollon enjoying the bestselling book 'City of Laughter' about drinking and humour in 18th century London.
Chris Gollon's gift for understatement is evident in the title, since when the hands are removed from the foreground figure's eyes, the motley crew of guests at his party may not, perhaps, be the most welcome of surprises. The work is also very modern, with the artist's use of scratching into the paint surface to create outlines.
