Size: 28" x 22"
This work is a silk-screen monotype Chris Gollon produced in 2005 as a study for Stations of The Cross VIII: Jesus Speaks to the Women of Jerusalem. (See Commissions page for details).
Monotypes are a reverse one-off process. The printmaker heavily inks a zinc plate, and the artist makes the image by removing the ink with a brush, finger or rag. Once finished, a slightly dampened sheet of fine art paper is placed over it, and it is then passed through a heavy press (which looks and acts like a mangle). Once out the other side, the paper is peeled back, miraculously holding the image perfectly, while the plate is just a mess of ink with no trace of the image. Only one print can be made each time, and the the plate is re-inked and the artist makes a new and different image each time.
