Incarnation, Mary & Women From The Bible

This series of paintings by Chris Gollon was produced for a major solo exhibition in Guildford Cathedral (28 Jan – 3 Mar 2014), curated by IAP Fine Art. They represent the first return to religious subject matter by the artist since his Fourteen Stations of the Cross (2000 – 2008). The series of paintings look at the subject of incarnation, as well as focusing on the women in both the New Testament and Old Testament, some of who are nameless like Job’s Wife and Noah’s Wife. It also includes two women who came after the Bible, namely the martyr St Lucy and the Christian mystic and writer Julian of Norwich. A full colour catalogue with insightful texts by novelist Sara Maitland, art historian Tamsin Pickeral, Canon Dr Andrew Bishop and Canon Dr Julie Gittoes accompanied this fascinating exhibition. The exhibition then became a major national touring exhibition to English cathedrals  in 2015, travelling to the cathedrals of Norwich, Chichester, Durham and Hereford. At each cathedral Gollon added a new work, for example at Chichester Cathedral, the first ever image in art history of Judas Iscariot’s wife. This large touring exhibition attracted much national press/media attention, including an interview with Chris Gollon by Clare Balding and major broadsheet coverage as here:  The Independent. A BBC TV NEWS interview with Chris Gollon can be watched here: Chichester Cathedral.
